What is ANEMONE Global?
Established in Japan in 2019 as ANEMONE (All-Nippon Environmental DNA Monitoring Network), ANEMONE Global is a collaborative international initiative dedicated to aquatic biodiversity monitoring using environmental DNA (eDNA) technologies.
Our growing network spans multiple countries and ecosystems, from coastal waters to freshwater rivers, uniting researchers, local governments, and civil society organizations in a shared mission to:
- Track biodiversity change
- Support local conservation efforts
- Empower communities through science
- Contribute valuable data to global biodiversity initiatives
In 2025, ANEMONE Global was endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade, recognizing its contribution to sustainable ocean and freshwater management worldwide.

Our Global Network…One sample at a time
ANEMONE Global is more than a scientific initiative, it is a growing, living network of people and ecosystems connected by a shared mission: to understand and protect aquatic biodiversity through environmental DNA (eDNA).
Since our founding, the ANEMONE Global network has expanded across 12 countries, spanning freshwater rivers, lakes, and marine coastlines from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Each country brings unique ecosystems, challenges, and strengths to our collective effort. Together, we are building a global picture of aquatic biodiversity change, one sample at a time.

Our network includes:
- University laboratories
- Research institutes
- Local high schools and community science teams
- Non-profit organizations and conservation groups
- Municipal and national environmental agencies
These partners bring local expertise, community access, and scientific rigor to ANEMONE Global. They are the heart of our work, engaging with local communities, and generating data to inform conservation and policy.
